Teaching

Workshops

I have taught writers’ workshops for Glasgow University, Lapidus, Stanza, WEA and the Taliesin Trust, as well as running independent writers’ groups. I’ve also worked in Women’s Centres, in prisons and schools, and with visual artists. I was one of the founders of the Scottish Writers’ Centre and have been a member of the Scottish Book Trust New Writers’ Awards Panel. Both novelists and poets from my workshops have gone on to successful publication.

I can be booked for workshops and readings directly or through Live Literature Scotland which helps fund events for groups and schools.

Testimonial

“Thoughtful. Incisive. Supportive. These are the words that come to mind when thinking of Gerrie’s critiques of my writing. She has the rare ability to understand what you are trying to achieve and then make suggestions to help you to do it better. Our tutorial group has been running for over 10 years and the reason it continues is that we all feel the benefit of her clear advice and useful comments.”

Here are some of the themed workshops I offer:

Life Stories

A series of practical workshops to help find a form for your story or family memoir, looking at aspects such as: Objects as a focus for memory and story-telling; Scenes; Voices and Viewpoints; Narrative; Letters and Diaries as materials and as forms to use; Finding the drama; Short forms and fragments. Offered as a series of workshops or as single meetings.

Poetry Collage

Exploring ways the technique of collage can be used to incorporate a diversity of voices into a poem. A two hour workshop first developed for Stanza Poetry Festival.

A Geography of Loss

How do we write about loss, whether the cultural losses of place, language, childhood; or the bodily losses of illness or death? This workshop explores images for different kinds of loss and looks at ways of finding voices for those experiences. Offered as a day school or as a two-hour workshop.

Humpty Dumpty

Linked workshops on the theme of falling apart, parting and being a part of. Particularly useful in therapeutic settings.

In addition to themed workshops, I am always happy to discuss submitted writing in a workshop setting.
